Digital Unwind: How to Use Your Phone to Decompress

Happy Friday, Mature Melanin Mavens! We’ve made it through another week, and it’s time to shift into self-care mode. But before you toss your phone across the room to escape notifications, let’s talk about how to use it as a tool for relaxation instead.

Our phones often feel like stress magnets—constant emails, never-ending group chats, and social media overload. But what if we flipped the script? What if, instead of draining us, our phones actually helped us decompress, reset, and relax?

📱 1. Guided Meditation & Breathing Apps

Instead of doomscrolling, try apps like Calm, Insight Timer, or Headspace for quick, guided meditations. Need a reset in under five minutes? Use the Breathe feature on your phone (available on iPhones and some Androids) for simple relaxation exercises.

🎶 2. Build a Relaxing Playlist

Music is a game-changer when it comes to stress relief. Whether it’s smooth jazz, gospel, classical, or lo-fi beats, a calming playlist can instantly shift your mood. Create a “Decompress” playlist in Spotify or Apple Music and let it work its magic after a long day.

🌊 3. Watch ASMR or Nature Videos

Sometimes, the simplest way to relax is to watch the waves crash, listen to rain falling, or hear someone whisper softly. ASMR videos or nature soundscapes on YouTube can be surprisingly soothing. Try a few and see what helps you melt the stress away.

🎨 4. Get Lost in a Digital Coloring Book

Who says coloring is just for kids? Apps like Colorfy or Happy Color give you a mindful, creative escape without needing an actual coloring book. Tap, color, breathe, and unwind.

📖 5. Read an E-Book or Listen to an Audiobook

Instead of scrolling social media at night, escape into a book! Use Kindle, Apple Books, or Libby (a free app that connects to your library) to dive into a good read. Prefer to listen? Audible is perfect for audiobooks that you can enjoy while soaking in a bubble bath.

✍🏾 6. Journal Your Thoughts

A simple notes app can be your best friend when it comes to brain-dumping the day’s stress. Or try a journaling app like Day One or Journey to keep track of your thoughts, gratitude lists, and affirmations.

😴 7. Use a White Noise or Sleep App

If stress is keeping you up at night, a sleep app like Rain Rain, Relax Melodies, or Sleep Sounds can play soothing background noise to help you drift off. Bonus: Some of these apps even have bedtime stories for adults!

Unplug Without Logging Off

The key to using your phone to decompress is intentionality. Instead of letting it control you, take charge of your screen time and use it to nurture your well-being.

What’s one way you plan to use your phone to relax this weekend? Let’s chat in the comments!
